Bangkok and Kolkata are set to be connected by a new road, heralding the ultimate road trip experience in Asia. The Kolkata-Bangkok highway will establish a crucial link between these two prominent cities, strengthening ties between India and Thailand.
Announced during a recent business conclave organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the ambitious project is part of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The construction of the trilateral highway is expected to be completed within the next three to four years.

1) The highway will commence from Bangkok, Thailand, and traverse through several significant cities such as Sukhothai and Mae Sot in Thailand, Yangon, Mandalay, Kalewa, and Tamu in Myanmar, before reaching India.
2) Within India, the highway will pass through Moreh, Kohima, Guwahati, Srirampur, and Siliguri before ultimately reaching Kolkata.
3) The total distance covered by the highway will exceed 2,800 km.
4) The Indian section of the highway will be the longest stretch, while the smallest section will be in Thailand.
5) Notably, a section of the highway in Thailand has already been completed, showcasing progress in the project.
6) The construction of the Tamu to Kalewa road, a vital part of this highway, is estimated to cost approximately US$ 27.28 million.
