As part of the global World Tourism Day celebrations, the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) and Skal International, in collaboration with Goa Tourism, have organized an exciting lineup of activities on September 27 to showcase Goa's cultural and historical heritage.
This year's theme, focusing on Tourism & Peace, includes three exclusive Heritage Walks that offer an in-depth exploration of Goa’s rich history and local life. These walks are open to everyone, providing a unique chance to discover Goa in a whole new way. A key highlight of the celebrations will be the launch of a coffee table book during the cooking competition "Goencho Swad," hosted by the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM). This event not only celebrates Goa’s culinary traditions but also adds a literary element, offering insights into the state’s diverse cultural and gastronomic heritage.
Mr. Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of GTDC, stated, “World Tourism Day is an opportunity to celebrate not just the beauty of Goa but also the stories, culture, and heritage that make it unique. Through initiatives like the Heritage Walks and the Stakeholders Meet, we aim to promote responsible tourism that respects our environment and communities while providing enriching experiences for travelers.”
Mr. Jack Sukija, President of TTAG, added, “These World Tourism Day events aim to strengthen the connection between visitors and Goa’s cultural heritage. By exploring historic sites and engaging with local communities, we encourage a more immersive and sustainable approach to tourism that benefits both travelers and locals. We invite all our stakeholders to celebrate at the Stakeholder Meet at Nandanvan. On the 28th, learn about the 'Making of Pao' with Soul Travelling, and on the 29th, immerse yourself in the jungle with Mrugaya Expeditions or visit the temple trail at Marcel with Soul Travelling.”
Ms. Reshma Alves, Secretary of Skal International, Goa, remarked, “Our partnership with TTAG and Goa Tourism for World Tourism Day allows us to celebrate the unique cultural fabric of Goa while promoting a mindful approach to travel that preserves its beauty for future generations.”
The first Heritage Walk, hosted by the Museum of Christian Art, will take participants through four significant monuments on the holy hill of Monte Santo in Old Goa, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, meeting at the Our Lady of the Rosary Church. The second walk, organized by the Make It Happen team, will explore the charming village of Saligao, starting at 4:30 PM and ending by 6:30 PM, with the meeting point at Mae De Deus Church.
The third walk, led by Soul Travelling, will offer an engaging visit to one of Goa’s oldest planned markets, Mapusa, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, starting at the Taxi Stand. Participation in all walks is free and includes refreshments, a commemorative T-shirt, and guided tours. Additionally, Soul Travelling will host a "Life of Pao" walk on September 28 at 2 PM and a Temple Trail in Marcel on September 29 at 9 AM.
These events highlight Goa’s commitment to sustainable tourism by showcasing its unique heritage and engaging with the local community. The collaboration between TTAG, Skal International, and Goa Tourism reflects a shared vision of promoting responsible tourism while celebrating Goa’s rich cultural and historical legacy.
