IndiGo, the largest airline in India, has announced the launch of the Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR) flight procedure for its flights to Kathmandu. Today, IndiGo successfully completed a validation flight using this new procedure, following the necessary clearance and provisional approval from the DGCA. This new technology marks a significant leap in aviation safety and efficiency, allowing pilots to navigate the challenging terrain of the Kathmandu Valley with greater accuracy.
The RNP AR system is tailored for airports in difficult, high-altitude environments, such as Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. Given the airport's location amidst the Himalayas, landing there has been a considerable challenge, especially under adverse weather conditions. The RNP AR technology enables aircraft to follow precise flight paths, reducing the risks associated with the mountainous terrain.
By incorporating the RNP AR procedure into all its Kathmandu flights, IndiGo aims to greatly improve passenger safety. This advanced system facilitates continuous descent approaches, which in turn optimizes airspace use, cuts down on fuel consumption, and lowers emissions.
