In a recent development, all tiger reserves and heads of wildlife divisions in Karnataka have been instructed by the principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) to provide insurance coverage to all visitors. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of tourists exploring eco-tourism sites across the state. Kumar Pushkar, the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), stated that the insurance cost will be integrated into the gate fee collected at these sites.
Karnataka is renowned for its well-preserved tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and national parks, which attract a significant number of travelers each year. These eco-tourism destinations offer various adventurous activities such as kayaking, trekking, boating, rafting, waterfall visits, and safaris. However, these activities inherently involve certain risks, including encounters with wildlife, bee attacks, drowning, and accidents leading to permanent or partial disability. Until now, none of these activities were covered by insurance, and only exceptional cases were compensated through the forest department or the state's relief fund.
Previously, Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) provided insurance coverage to their guests participating in such activities or visiting these sites. However, there was no insurance offered by the forest department for other visitors. Pushkar emphasized the intention to extend this benefit to all travelers, regardless of whether they book through JLR or purchase tickets directly for adventure activities. The insurance cost will be incorporated into the gate fee collected at these sites, and collaborations with insurance agencies will be established to provide insurance coverage to the visitors.
