UN Tourism and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) have forged a new partnership to enhance global Sports Tourism.
The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) represents a significant advancement in their collaboration, underscoring their joint commitment to sustainable practices and the positive impact of Sports Tourism on destinations. This agreement aims to harness the influence of major sporting events to boost tourism, drive economic growth, and promote sustainability.
The MoU was officially signed by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Monza, Italy.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili stated, "The intersection of sports and tourism holds great potential for driving sustainable development, economic growth, and cultural exchange. Our partnership with the FIA is a significant step toward realizing this potential."
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem added, "This collaboration with UN Tourism underscores the FIA's strong commitment to sustainable tourism and social responsibility. By aligning our global efforts with UN Tourism’s mission, we aim to promote responsible travel and set new standards for sustainability across FIA events. Our dedication goes beyond advocacy; we are actively implementing sustainable practices, educating future generations, and effecting meaningful change in sports and tourism."
With over 40 years of collaboration, the FIA has been a leader in global motorsports and sustainable tourism. Under Ben Sulayem's leadership, the FIA manages prestigious events like Formula 1, which significantly enhances local tourism. In recognition of his efforts, Ben Sulayem has been named UN Tourism’s Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism in the "Sport" category. He remarked, "I am honored to be appointed as UN Tourism's Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism. The FIA is committed to delivering vital sustainability solutions in sport, mobility, and tourism."
The UN Tourism-FIA partnership will enhance the understanding of Sports Tourism, a rapidly growing sector valued at approximately $609 billion, with a 17.5% annual growth rate. This collaboration will be highlighted at the 3rd World Sports Tourism Congress in Madrid, Spain, on November 28-29, 2024, where the FIA will contribute its expertise to discussions on sustainability and global collaboration in Sports Tourism.
