Hidden fees have become a prominent issue in modern commercial aviation. What appear to be great deals can quickly become costly affairs that make comparison shopping far more complex than simply pulling up a list of flights on a given day and selecting the lowest price.
Types of common fees
According to a recent survey, 98% of Americans who have flown with an airline say they have encountered unexpected airline fees. Among them, nearly 39% of travelers said they frequently experience these covert fees, while almost 60% of respondents believed that hidden airline fees have been on the rise since 2019, even before the global pandemic impacted the aviation industry.
Among the various hidden fees, those associated with baggage emerged as the most frustrating and irritating for passengers. An overwhelming 78% of respondents expressed annoyance with carry-on baggage fees, closely followed by 76% of travelers who found checked baggage fees exasperating.
Nearly a fifth of Americans surveyed (19%) said they have been forced to pay between $500 and $1,000 for covert airline fees. While some passengers faced less costly hidden fees, some 58% of respondents said they have grappled with fees exceeding $100.
Although around 36% of travelers said they would look for ways to avoid such charges in the future, approximately 27% of respondents indicated that they had grown accustomed to hidden fees, considering them a normal part of the air travel experience
Seeking transparency and fairness
In light of growing discontent with undisclosed charges, an overwhelming 87% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the US Department of State should require airlines to disclose all fees upfront. This desire for transparency and fairness in airfare pricing reflects passengers' wish for clear and predictable travel costs.
Acknowledging this concern, President Biden announced a new government initiative on September 26, 2022, aimed at tackling the issue of hidden fees in the aviation industry. If successful, this initiative would require airlines to disclose certain fees upfront, potentially helping to restore a level of trust and confidence among travelers.
Hidden fees have emerged as a prevalent issue in modern commercial aviation. They impact passengers' travel experiences, financial planning, and overall perceptions of airlines and airline travel.
These insights into passengers’ experiences with hidden fees underscore both the prevalence of undisclosed charges as well as some of the types of fees that elicit the most frustration from travelers, with baggage-related fees topping the list.
With an overwhelming majority of respondents hoping to see some sort of requirement for disclosure of upfront fees, the proposed government initiative holds promise for increased transparency and fairness in air travel.
As air travel continues to evolve, addressing the issue of hidden fees may be an important step in ensuring a more positive and enjoyable experience for all passengers.
